14/07/1930 – 15/12/2011
81 years old
My father grew up through World War II, (just 9 years old when war broke out), like many young men of his generation he went on to do his National Service in the RAF. Dad chose a career in the British Transport Police, and after completing police training, was based in the ports of Grimsby and Immingham, retiring after 30 years service in the force.
I (Philip Goldberg) have many fond memories of my dad, we walked a couple of stretches of the Pennine Way when I was a teenager; Alston to Middleton-in-Teesdale on one occasion. I remember trips to London, and even Heathrow to view the aeroplanes taking off and landing – including the highlight of one trip seeing Concorde fly out, on another occasion we went to spectate at a test match, where I recall Bob Willis (bowler), really tall!! Doing physio prior to the match starting, my dad loved cricket. He always commented on GTFC’s poor performances!! Finally my dad had a phenomenal memory and was able to constantly reel off countless jokes.
David Goldberg, my father, was a deeply religious man, regularly attending church from a young age (from what I remember), certainly devoting a large amount of his retirement to the church. He already knew Doris Phillipson (his future wife by the time he joined St Augustine’s of Hippo Grimsby). He became church warden approximately 20 years ago, he regularly organised the Lent Lunches, he was heavily involved in various church fetes / fairs over the years – he made the Tombola his own!! He managed the church hall on a weekly basis, he would regale stories of leaks, boiler problems and maintenance issues as they came his way including a number of church hall windows broken, he managed his duties in a professional and friendly manner, finally I understand dad had an excellent attendance record missing very few services, he was involved in the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday services and on a Sunday up to 4 times a day.
My dad was a devoted husband and father, he was generous, supportive and always putting others before him.
I am proud of you Dad!!!
You will remain in my memory and heart forever, and missed by many.
Philip Goldberg
A TRIBUTE TO DAVID GOLDBERG posted by Fr Stephen
It was a shock to hear of David Goldberg’s passing just before Christmas. Our hearts go out to Doris and her family in her sad loss and the loss to our church, St. Augustine’s, where David had been a devoted servant and church-warden for many years. I think of his family, Doris, the children, Rachelle, Pauline, Philip and Janet and the grandchildren, Jemima, Harry, Katie-Laura, Alan and Edwin and great grandson, Jack and his sister, Barbara.
David was very much a Grimbarian. He served in the RAF and his main work was with the British Transport police, stationed at Immingham. He loved animals, dogs, cats and horses. His sense of humour was most shown in his telling a good, cheesy joke. He had many varied hobbies including cricket, steam trains, and Grimsby Town Football Club, which he supported through thick and thin!
When I asked Doris about his hobbies, she immediately said ‘Church’. Of course, David was devoted to the Church and particularly to the Guild of the Servants of the Sanctuary. He was a man of enormous faith, devoted to the Church, an exemplary church-warden. With Tony Jones they were a very good team. His character can be summed up by saying that he was enormously loyal. He was a stalwart. His regimented life meant he was totally reliable and ready as always to help his neighbour. To the end he was utterly faithful to his Lord and to his Church. May he have his reward, rest in peace and rise in glory!
